    About Mesa

Mesa’s history dates back to the Hohokam Indians two thousand years ago. The original canal system, which stretched over 125 miles and is still used today, was designed by the Hohokam, whose name means Departed People. During the 1500s and 1600s, missionaries and explorers, including Coronado, Father Kino, and Marcos de Niza, came to Arizona (though not present-day Mesa). Esteban (also called Estevan or Estevanico), who looked for the city of gold, was a lesser-known explorer.

In the 1700s, Apache Indians, east of our town, forced the Spanish away. In the late 1800s, Army troops battled the Apaches, opening the way for white settlement. During the early part of the 19th century, Kit Carson and other explorers came through the Salt River Valley.

In September 1877, the First Mesa Company, comprised of 85 members, left Utah and Idaho. Crismon, Pomeroy, Sirrine, and Robson were the business founders, some of whom were polygamous. Crossing the Colorado River at Lee’s Ferry, where there is a steep cliff across the river, they took a different path from Jones.

Neighboring cities include Gilbert, Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Chandler, Tempe, and Scottsdale.
