    About Tempe

Enterprising farmers moved into the Tempe region following Fort McDowell’s establishment on the eastern edge of the Salt River Valley of central Arizona in 1865. They filled out the irrigation canals left by the prehistoric Hohokam people and constructed new ones to bring water to their fields from the Salt River. Arizona’s military posts and mining towns were soon supplied with food by Valley farms.

Hispanic families from southern Arizona were the first settlers to come to the Tempe area, south of the Salt River and east of Phoenix. They helped create the Kirkland-McKinney Ditch and the San Francisco Canal, the first two irrigation canals, and began small farms to the east and west of a large butte (Tempe Butte). Some of these Mexican settlers established a town in 1872, east of Tempe Butte, named San Pablo. Irrigation water was carried to more than 20,000 acres of prime farmland through a network of canals that stretched many miles south of the river.

The Hayden Mill’s crops of wheat, barley, and oats ensured steady work. The milled flour was hauled across the region to forts and other settlements. During those years, Tempe’s commercial center along Mill Avenue deteriorated. Mill Avenue, inspired by Tempe’s centennial in 1971, was revitalized into an entertainment and shopping district that, nowadays, draws people from all over the Valley. Today, Tempe is Arizona’s eighth-largest city, with a strong modern economy focused on commerce, tourism, and education.

Neighboring cities include Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Ahwatukee, Gilbert, and Phoenix.
